Week 4

The theme of today's session was  trade tests. Everyone completed a 45 minute manicure including either red or french polish. They were told to arrive at class ready to compete their trade tests. During the service the models completed a peer assessment and gave feedback to their therapists.b

Week 2

Students were asked to research local salons with a view to enquiring about work experience opportunities.  All of the identified salons will be contacted regarding work experience opportunities for our students.

The next task required everyone to log onto the below website to build their C.V's. They were then asked to right a personal statement which reflected one of three job advertisements provided. They were told that they should us similar wording in their statements in order to tailor it to suit the different job requirements.

Finally, everyone was given the above  homework.

Nearly all of the level one's completed their homework; those that hadn't were supported to do so at the beginning of the session while everyone else researched local salons. Only half of the level 2's had completed their homework;  some to a high standard and some hadn't engaged with their blogs at all. This was disappointing because the level 2 learners should be more able than the level 1's. The C.V building was a worthwhile exercise for the level one's. However, the level 2's were less keen to complete a C.V using reed as they all had C.V's already. Even though the pace was quick and quite ambitious I feel that the level 1's session was far more successful than the level 2's due to the fact that their was two of us in the level 1's session. Michaela Greaves enthusiasm and confidence was a driver with the level 1's. Unfortunately, I don't possess the same confidence or experience with C.V building and teaching that she does. This is the conclusion that I have made so far.

Week 1 Level 1 & 2

Today was week one for two new groups. Level 1's were first in the morning then level 2's in the afternoon. As this was the first week both groups needed to set up their blogs; so they can use them to reflect after each session. Martin Cope came along to support me with this. I am becoming more confident setting up the learners blogs but I feel better knowing Martin is there just in case anything goes wrong! In both groups there were a couple of students who set up their blogs then supported their peers to do theirs; this was great to see as it provided a very supportive learning environment.
During the session everyone was given the brief to set up their blogs to reflect their personalities. They then had to consider their future career goals and include images on their blog. Finally they had to email a picture from their phones to attach to their blogs of them blogging.
As homework both groups were set a task to research and evaluate other industry specific blogs. I have published comments on most blogs congratulating them on their work so far.

I used  the above slide as a simple mode to writing a reflective blog

The following are samples of blogs that the level 1's created:

This was great because Terri attached a link to a nail technician blogging website

Commercial 6/1/16

This week in commercial work experience we had four external clients booked in for: a facial, 2 for manicures and 1 for eye treatments. Keeley was our salon manager. She successfully contributed to the safe and efficient running of the salon by assisting her peers, following salon procedures and replenishing products and salon sunderies.

I then spoke to everyone individually about work experience opportunities, their C.V's and Saturday jobs with a view to everyone gaining as much experience as possible in a salon environment.
