Week 2 (2/12/15)

As this was the second week of work experience for the level 2's I opened up client columns on reception. Unfortunately, we only had one client booked in for treatments. Oana performed an eyelash tint, eyebrow tint and eyebrow shape and Alisha did an underarm wax on her as a summative assessment. The rest of the group did treatments on each.This was a good opportunity for everyone to practice the treatments that they needed to improve.

 After discussing promotional packages last week we decided on 3 options which comprise of:
Option 1 - Facial and Manicure £8.50
Option 2 - Eyelash tint, Eyebrow tint, Eyebrow shape and lash extensions £10.50
Option 3 - 30% off all waxing treatments
These offers are emailed from reception to all staff at college each week. In addition, Sarah and Charlotte offered to devise a promotional poster that we can put up around college to encourage clients into the salon.

Some of the group were struggling to right reflective accounts on their blogs so I explained a simple reflective guide that they could follow to right their blogs. As follows:

How you felt about it
How you can improve your practice in the futue.

LEVEL 2 Work Experience Week 1


The level 2 beauty program requires that all students should take part in 30 hours of work experience. This can either be undertaken in industry or college
I introduced work experience and explained that it's main focus would be on customer service, retail and sales.
Everyone set up their blogs and made their first posts. I explained that we use our blogs to reflect on our practices in order to improve our future practices.





I booked out our departments new laptop trolley for everyone to setup their blogs

Grace already had her own blog so she was able to support her peers with setting up their blogs

Imogen set-up her own blog with no problems then supported others with theirs

Ellie is a confident and mature member of the group. She offered support to others with regards to setting up g-mail accounts.

Once you have set your blog up Blogger is extremely easy to us. Initially making it an excellent tool for all students

Preparation for H32

Part of the level 3 program is a unit called H32. This unit is about working with others to plan, implement and evaluate promotional activities. The students are planning a pamper day to be held on the 27th November. They have devised different beauty package and retail sets.

Charity Waxing Event

During the half term break Ellie, Alana and I took part in a charity waxing event at BHP Accountants in Chesterfield. Between use we waxed six men's legs. This kind of speed waxing will help the girls to develop and refine their waxing skills.   
 Sam Bradwell who organised the event set up a "just giving" account which raised upwards of £600 pounds for the Macmillan Cancer Charity. This was a positive and enjoyable experience for all involved not only because it helps a good cause but it also strengthens our links with local businesses.

Commercial - 21/10/15

This week during our session we had 5 external clients booked in for treatments ranging from micro-current facials to ibd fingers and toes. The decision to stop offering ibd in the Heart space and instead base this service back in the commercial salon so far has proved to be the right one as we have been busier, also, we are now promoting this to our external clients instead of staff and students at college who either didn't have the time or the funds for the service. This way we are widening our potential client base and increasing our turnover. I also feel it is good for the students to see how been flexible and willing to change direction if something is not working is how business survive and prosper.
In addition, I reviewed individuals progress with regards to a SMART targets I had previously set for them; this involved them investigating work experience opportunities. I am pleased to state that 2 of our students will no longer be required to attend these work experience sessions as they have found employment in salons. The majority are actively looking and taking their CV's in to potential employers. As for the couple who haven't been inclined to seriously consider looking for work to-date this has helped them to focus on the benefits of gaining experience in industry which will increase their employability. 
We experienced two difficulties during the session which I have asked the people involved to reflect upon via their blogs. The first, was due to a student not completing a thorough enough consultation. This resulted in me having to perform extractions on the clients blocked pores post facial. The client did receive a lovely Eve Taylor facial by the student, however, this has highlighted the importance of identifying the clients needs before starting their treatment. This client has since rebooked for 5 weeks time for a galvanic facial as this will provide a deeper cleanse and includes extractions.The second, involved curing ibd on a clients toes. The LED lamps are too small for the feet often resulting in the polish being knocked. A solution to this would be to use the UV lamps for toes, as a result this will increase curing time and mean longer service time.

Week 6 14/10/15

During this session we spoke about work experience in industry. I asked everyone to investigate local salons and websites. We will discuss this next week.

Ella and Ellie worked together to do their client ibd polish on the toes and fingers. They also sold this client an Age Resist night cream and Eve Taylor facial.



Katie performed the 1st of  5 micro-current facials on her client

Jasmine performed an Eve Taylor facial with a peel off mask on her client. She sold over £40 worth of products to her client.

Verity was salon manager. She contributed to the safe and efficient running of the commercial salon.

Commercial 9/10/15


During this commercial session our therapists told their clients about our autumn offer which is a micro-current facial for a reduced rate of £10. This offer is available every Wednesday for the next 5 weeks. A course of 5 treatment was on promotion today only at £45. Everyone did extremely well and passed on the information. They also identifying gaps in their clients home care routine and sharing product advice with their clients . I set each of the group a SMART target to investigate work experience opportunities after their 10 week work experience in college has finished.


Anne completed facial and eyebrow. During the session Anne told her client about our autumn offer and as a result she booked in for a course of 5 micro-current facials.

Commercial week 4 (2/10/15)


In our level 3 commercial salon this week we had some Spanish exchange students visiting. They provided hand and arm massages plus file and polish to our clients while they were having facials. In Spain these students are training privately in Beauty Therapy and Autistic's at a cost to themselves of 3000 euros per academic year. It was a good experience for everyone involved and while they were with us they all commented how calm and relaxing our salon was and also said that they would like to stay and do there training here.

Week 3 (23/9/15)




Ellie & Alana completed Eve Taylor facials on clients. Both will use their blogs to reflect on their experiences 

During feedback we discussed what they had found out about their clients skin care routine and identified gaps for retail 

After 2 week of offering ibd polish and only one paying client we discussed ideas to promote our service. The outcome of this was to offer it at the earlier time of 12.15 which is during lunch instead of 1.45 when the heart space is quite

Bosom Buddies Event

Every year Jane Buchanan takes part in an event arranged by members of Bosom Buddies, which is a cancer support group from Calow Hospital. We went along with three level 3 students to provide manicures, pedicures and facials for group members. It was a great day much enjoyed by all involved. Plus, we recruited some new clients for college’s commercial salon and retailed over £100 worth of Eve Taylor and ibd products.
